Xcel Energy is the largest utility in the state of Colorado, providing electricity and gas to 1.6 million residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers.

Under a settlement agreement with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission and other interested parties, Xcel will be spending up to $196 million on its demand-side management programs through 2013. It is offering the following programs, some of which are new, to its Colorado commercial and industrial customers:

Program Description
Boiler efficiency Cash rebates for upgrading to a higher-efficiency natural gas boiler.
Cooling efficiency Cooling accounts for a large percentage of building energy use. Upgrading to a new and efficient model leads to obvious energy bill savings. Eight different common types of systems are eligible for rebates.
Compressed air efficiency Funding for studies, and rebates for improved efficiencies.
Commercial real estate efficiency Funding of up to 75% of study costs, rebates for implementation, and 30% bonus rebates.
Custom efficiency For electric and gas efficiency measures not covered by other programs.
Energy assessments/ analyses/audits 3 tiers: a free online assessment; an onsite building assessment ($200 for <25,000 sq ft, $300 for >25,000sq ft); and up to 75% of engineering audits.
Energy management systems Rebates for purchase and installation (or upgrade) of automated building controls that reduce electric or gas use and/or shift electric demand away from peak periods.
Furnace efficiency Rebates for new or retrofit high-efficiency furnaces.
Lighting efficiency Rebates for installing high efficiency lighting in new construction, OR for retrofitting the lighting in an existing building. Many different lighting solutions are included.
Motors and drives Rebates for purchasing new, efficient motors and drives, or upgrading existing ones.
New construction energy design assistance New buildings and major renovations qualify for consultation, computer modeling, and help towards LEED certification.
New construction rebates It’s much easier (and cheaper) to install energy-efficient technology from the outset than trying to retrofit it later.
Process efficiency This program helps industrial firms identify, analyze, and target energy efficiency improvements, as well as help designing a 3-5 year energy management plan.
Recommissioning Recommissioning improves a building’s existing mechanical systems and controls through low- or no-cost solutions. Recommissioning projects usually save between 5-20% of total building energy costs.
Self-Direct The customer performs the majority of design, engineering, measurement, verification and reporting of the project.
Standard offer Rebates on investment-grade energy audits and bundled conservation measures.
Note that in some cases, especially studies and custom measures, pre-approval is required.
