The Governor’s Energy Office is Colorado's lead state agency promoting energy efficiency. The GEO’s mission is to lead Colorado to a New Energy Economy by advancing energy efficiency and renewable, clean energy resources, in order to boost Colorado’s Economy and protect its natural environment. To accomplish this, the GEO provides technical assistance, financial assistance, education, and advocacy on energy efficiency matters for businesses, public institutions, and residences.

The GEO has several different programs to maximize the energy efficiency in both existing and new buildings in Colorado:

  • Existing Buildings: Performance Contracting
Performance Contracting is a way of improving a building’s energy efficiency with no up-front capital outlays - the project costs are paid over time by energy savings. The GEO has simplified and streamlined this process by pre-approving a list of Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) to perform the work, and providing a wealth of information for building owners and facility managers to help them enter into such arrangements.
  • New Buildings: High Performance Design for Commercial Buildings Program
The GEO partners with builders, building owners, and other stakeholders to help new construction projects be energy-efficient and environmentally-sound from the start, including helping new construction projects attain LEED-NC status http://www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=220 wherever possible and cost-effective.

The GEO also manages and promotes several grant programs to fund energy efficiency improvements, including Advancing Colorado's Renewable Energy (for Colorado’s agriculture industry), the Advanced Technology Program, Anaerobic Digestion Feasibility, the New Energy Economy Development (NEED) Grant Program, and the Colorado Carbon Fund. More info and links for each of these is available here.
