Climate Wise is a business outreach program that encourages greenhouse gas
reductions by promoting energy efficiency, pollution prevention, solid waste
reduction, and travel reduction among Fort Collins businesses on a voluntary
basis. Businesses that commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions receive
technical assistance, public recognition, and networking opportunities with
their peers. Any Fort Collins business or organization that owns or operates a
non-residential building in the city may join the program.
By becoming a Climate Wise partner, businesses will receive free technical
assistance in identifying, implementing, measuring, and reporting actions that
reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This technical assistance begins with an
on-site assessment, which will identify specific steps that a business can take
to improve energy efficiency, prevent pollution, reduce solid waste generation,
and reduce travel needs. An Action Plan with goals is then developed, and a
process established to monitor progress.
Public recognition of business efforts include recognition from the mayor and
city council, an annual awards program, and advertising of the program members
in local news media. Peer networking opportunities involve technical seminars,
material exchanges, and member networking events.
The target goal for the Climate Wise program is to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions in Fort Collins by 93,390 tons/year of CO2 by 2010. To date, the
program has documented a reduction of 82.421 tons/year of CO2 from projects
implemented by Climate Wise partners.
